Jehovah-jireh

Hey all,

I'll start with an explanation of the subject line. As I mentioned last week, I've decided to read the Old Testament. So this week I read the book of Genesis. There is so much information packed in between those lines that it would take years to explain it all. But one of my biggest take-aways was Jehovah-jireh. It is the name of the mountain that God commanded Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac in Genesis 24. I'm not totally sure what language it is since the Hebrew version of Jehovah is Yeshuah, but it translates to English as "God will Provide." I thought it was a very beautiful, if not overly simple, phrase. I had a little bit of fun with it because I hung it on sticky notes throughout the apartment but I wouldn't tell Elder Stafford what it meant so he had to go find it for himself. Needless to say that it was very entertaining for me and I've learned so much in just a week! I can't wait to start Exodus when I get home tonight.

Last Monday was so cool, mainly because of the eclipse. It wasn't a total eclipse like back home but it was still 80% coverage! I was surprised just at the power of the sun. I'd put on the glasses and see that It was almost fully covered then I'd take them off and look around and It still looked totally normal. One of the Elders I was with got some really awesome pictures of it through the glasses,a few where you can see sun spots if you zoom in enough. I asked him to send me those because it was so cool looking!!

This week was a lot of walking and even more sitting on the bus. On the metro there are these guys who sell "products." It's stuff like Beats earbuds and Rolex watches, all of which everyone knows are are probably either fake or stolen. But there was one guy selling sunglasses and he looked at Elder Stafford reading Matthew. He asked him if he was reading the New Testament then commented that it looked like there was a lot more pages than his Bible. I told him that there was then briefly explained the rest of the books in the Quad. I gave him a pass-along card as he got off the train and we went our separate ways. Don't know if he'll call us or anything but it was a neat experience. I also had the chance to meet with a recent convert named Henok. He is from Ethiopia. His wife and child still live there. As I was talking to him I realized how lucky I am to be born in the US. He's been away from his wife for 11 months and I felt so bad for him. I can't even imagine what he must be feeling, especially on those days when she begs him to come home. But it was cool to see how much stronger the church has made him.

Throughout everything that I see and experience Jehovah-jireh always comes to my head and claims me.

as always,
Elder Howell
