Leave my boys alone

Hey everyone,

We had exchanges this week which means that Elder Cannon and I got to take in BYSA together. The unique thing about this exchange was that I go home next transfer, and he goes home this transfer, so a lot of our side conversations were talks about college and classes and (on his part) weddings. But it was a really fun exchange.

On Wednesday we walked all over West Baltimore, and I mean all over. I think I've forgotten to mention, but Elder Dixon has been in a boot all transfer, pictured below. He can still walk fine but he kept falling off curbs in Frederick and twisting it, so it started really hurting. When he went to the doctor, the doc didn't know what was wrong, only that it wasn't broken, so he stuck him in a boot and said to come back in two weeks. When we went back a little over a week ago, it wasn't any better or worse, so they had him get an MRI, and he has another appointment this week so I guess we'll see what happens. But that boot has been utterly destroyed since he got it cause he hasn't slowed down at all,- because missionaries,- so the bottom was almost completely worn through because I guess those boots weren't meant to be walking the broken up streets of Baltimore, (seriously, never buy a car that has lived in Baltimore, the shocks in my Legacy are gonna be shot by the time it hits 50,000 miles). He'd been ignoring the worn sole for a while, but on Wednesday, the top strap finally ripped from wear, so the boot was pretty much useless.

We did have a couple of cool moments while walking though, we had our usual half dozen or so, "Be safe in this area," but we also had three or four people tell us that we were perfectly safe because we had a "light" with us. That was honestly amazing to hear that people recognized the Spirit, even if a lot of then didn't know what it was. We also had an experience of someone sticking up for us, which is where my subject line comes from. As I'm sure you can guess, two well dressed white guys walking around the hood can be a cause for suspicion for a lot of people, especially when the government here is massively corrupt, I've made so many connections between Baltimore and Gotham that it isn't even funny. But anyway, we had one guy  who was standing on the corner by a liquor store, look us up and down, then tell us that we look like cops, he didn't move from his spot, he didn't act aggressive at all, he just made an observation, which isn't uncommon. The unique thing about this encounter was that as we laughed it off and told him we were just missionaries, was when someone from inside the liquor store yelled, "Hey! Leave my boys alone!" So despite everything you hear about this city, 90% of which is probably accurate, there are a lot of good people here.

Friday we had interviews with President, and got Elder Dixon's boot replaced. The funny thing about that was when we walked into the office and explained why we were there, the receptionist said she would take the boot to the back and get him a new boot. But when we showed her the boot, she paused and just looked at it for a second. When we asked her if this was the worst boot she'd ever seen, she just nodded, so Elder Dixon reached into his pocket and handed her the broken strap; she just stared at it for a minute while I tried not to laugh because she just looked so confused, it was hilarious!

Also, I found a rat yesterday, it was the size of my shoe! I took a picture but you don't want to see that.

Love you all,
Elder Howell
